Mud gas separator, also known as poorboy degasser or gas buster, used to separate gas from the drilling fluid, maintain mud density to prevent well kicks and potential blowouts, also prevent the release of toxic gases such as H₂S ensuring the safety of the drilling crew and equipment. The separated gas is carried by vent lines to the flare ignition device whcih has a safe distance from the rig.
